Also known as “man boobs”, “moobs”, “gyno”, the medical condition gynaecomastia, and even as “bitch tits” in cases of steroid use, male breasts affect nearly two thirds of the British male population.

Although this issue is extremely common, many men feel shame and embarrassment at the prospect of swimming, sunbathing, wearing tight clothes, and even going to the gym. The self-consciousness caused by gynaecomastia can even lead to serious mental health problems, such as depression. It is perhaps not surprising, then, that in 2012, 642 brave Brits decided to go under the knife and have their “moobs” reduced, making male breast reduction the third most popular form of surgery among UK men.

What Causes Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia occurs when the male breast becomes enlarged, as a result of an abnormal increase in the glandular tissue. However, in the majority of cases, there is no known cause of this phenomenon.

In some instances, enlargement of the male breasts can be due to taking certain drugs, such as anabolic steroids, marijuana, some anti-hypertensives, and oestrogens, and a handful of medical conditions can also cause the problem to emerge.

What Happens In Theatre?

The male breast reduction procedure usually involves a combination of cutting away excess breast tissue, and using liposuction to remove excess fat and make the edges of the excision smoother.

To do this, a small incision is made in the area surrounding the nipple, called the areola, which ensures that the scar remains hidden. The tissue is then removed, the fat sucked out, and on some occasions, excess skin is removed in order to give the chest area a tighter, more pert appearance.

How Long Does The Surgery Last?

The male breast reduction procedure usually lasts between one and two hours.

What Kind Of Anaesthetic Is Used?

The operation is usually carried out under general anaesthetic.

How Long Will My Hospital Stay Be?

Generally, this procedure requires an overnight stay in hospital. However, it can also be done as a day case.

What Happens In Aftercare?

In order to control the discomfort you experience, you will receive painkillers and possibly antibiotics, which will help prevent infection.

When you are discharged, you will also be given a pressure garment or vest, which helps to reduce post-operative swelling and improves your comfort. This should be worn for six weeks, and it shouldn’t be visible under your normal clothes.

How Long Will I Need To Take Off Work?

About a week will often suffice.

What Are The Risks?

With any surgery, complications are possible. However, at Austingraces we are determined to make sure that you are aware of any potential problems, and feel comfortable enough to ask us about any concerns you may have during your first consultation.

Possible complications can include infection, superficial wound breakdown, haematoma or accumulation of blood, fluid collection, and changes in sensation in the nipple. Other problems include contour irregularities such as “saucer” or “dinner plate” deformities, and raised or stretched scars.

Most of these issues are treatable with drainage, dressings, or drugs, and with time, the majority of patients do not find changes in sensation bothersome.
