Breast Reduction:

In 2012, nearly 5,000 breast reduction operations were performed, after patients with sore backs, painful shoulders, and recurring infections finally gave up on expensive underwear and approached their surgeons instead.

For women with large breasts, simple pleasures from shopping to jogging can feel like impossible tasks. Feeling uncomfortable, out of proportion, and even depressed is not uncommon among breast reduction patients, and when you reach a point at which your breasts impede rather than enhance your life, it’s time to consider surgery.

FAQs:

How Does A Reduction Differ From A Breast Lift?

During a breast uplift operation, or mastopexy, only skin is removed to tighten the breast and make it appear more pert. A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, removes excess breast tissue as well as skin.

Breast uplifts are performed on patients of all shapes and sizes; however breast reductions are more common amongst women with a C-cup and above.

What Happens In Theatre?

The two most popular forms of breast reduction operations access the breast tissue via an inverted ‘T’ shaped incision, or via a vertical incision. Our surgeon will use these access points to remove excess skin and breast tissue, leaving the nipple attached to the breast so that it can be repositioned later. Stitches are then used to mould the remaining breast tissue into a full, flattering shape, effectively moving the nipple to the most aesthetically pleasing position.

What Kind Of Anaesthetic Is Used?

The operation is usually carried out under general anaesthetic.

How Long Does The Operation Take?

It takes between 2 and 3 hours to reduce both breasts.
